Eternal Balance
A bottle opener that reimagines what it means to be sustainable.
When we think of sustainability, we all imagine recycling, clean water and air, and consuming less energy. What we do not imagine is fire, disease, and death. However, these both play a role in maintaining homeostasis and balance in life. Forest fires are a natural part of reinvigorating and renewing the land, just as rain is needed to contain these fires and give life.
This project was meant to reflect how we need both life and death, growth and decay, and fire and water to maintain life as we know. I wanted to convey that sustainability is an eternal balance between these forces. This is achieved by having on each end of the bottom opener a wave to represent water, and a flame to represent fire, connected in an infinity symbol. I designed the opener with surface modeling before generating the CAM in HSMWorks. The opener was machined out of brass to give it a good weight and patina as it ages.
